Baby Shower and Gender Reveal Catering in Medellín

Medellin Elite Catering prepares baby shower and gender reveal food for families across Medellín, from a 15-guest tea in an Envigado living room to a 60-guest garden party with a dessert table in pastel colors. Since 2019 our kitchen has cooked for these afternoons with one priority above the rest: the mother-to-be can eat everything on the table.

We plan with expectant parents, grandmothers-to-be and friends organizing a surprise, many of them expats whose families join from abroad on a video call. Our coordinators speak English and Spanish and can walk the whole family through the menu on one call.

Our cooks hold food-handler certificates renewed every year and work under Resolution 2674 of 2013. That training, applied at every party we cater, is why our pregnancy-safe menu goes further than leaving out the wine.

Our Baby Shower and Gender Reveal Catering

We cater daytime baby showers and gender reveal parties for 15 to 60 guests at homes, cafés, building social rooms and gardens across Medellín. The menu, servers, tableware, mocktails, setup and cleanup come in one quote, and a dessert table or reveal cake can be added on top. Drop-off brunches reach homes across the south of the valley, including our catering in Itagüí, with cold items kept below 5 °C until they reach your table.

In Colombia these parties often fall in the afternoon, the time locals call onces, when coffee, juices, sandwiches and something sweet come out between lunch and dinner. Many hosts choose a brunch or a tea instead of a full meal, which keeps the party relaxed and the menu light.

Gender reveals have grown into their own event, sometimes combined with the shower and sometimes held earlier, around 18 to 20 weeks. We plan both the same way, with the food built around the one moment everyone came to see.

Pregnancy-Safe Menus

A pregnancy-safe menu is one with no raw or undercooked animal protein, no unpasteurized dairy, no alcohol and limited caffeine, because those carry risks such as Listeria and Toxoplasma. Every baby shower menu we cook follows these rules for every guest, so the mother-to-be never has to ask what she can eat.

In Medellín, fresh cheeses like quesito and campesino cheese are often sold unpasteurized in markets, so we buy only pasteurized cheese from producers with an INVIMA sanitary registration. Other rules we follow on every shower menu:

  • All poultry and pork cooked to at least 74 °C in the center, and beef served well done
  • No sushi, no ceviche (lime juice does not kill bacteria) and no smoked salmon unless it is cooked into a hot dish
  • No cold cured meats such as salami or serrano ham on platters
  • Mayonnaise, aioli and desserts like mousse made with pasteurized eggs
  • Fruit and leafy greens washed and disinfected, juices pasteurized or freshly made in our kitchen
  • Decaffeinated coffee alongside regular tinto, and an alcohol-free bar

That bar is often the favorite part of the menu. Lulada with fresh lulo, maracuyá frappé, limonada de coco and a sparkling hibiscus spritz look festive in a glass and suit every guest.

Brunch, High Tea or Cocktail?

Brunch suits a morning party with a mixed crowd, high tea suits a smaller afternoon gathering, and a cocktail suits a larger evening shower with partners invited. The comparison below helps you pick.

Gender Reveal Food Moments

The reveal itself is a food moment, so we time the menu around it and keep the dessert table covered until the color is out. The classic choice is a reveal cake, white or neutral outside with pink or blue sponge inside, which the parents cut together in front of everyone.

For a bigger burst, we fill mini cupcakes with colored cream so each guest bites into the answer at the same time, or fill a chocolate sphere that cracks open under warm sauce. We usually schedule the reveal about an hour into the party, after the savory food, when the light is still good for photos. The dessert table opens straight after, with macarons, cookies and cake pops in both colors so it looks right whatever the result.

Questions and answers

Baby Shower FAQs

What food should I avoid at a baby shower?

Avoid raw or undercooked fish and meat, unpasteurized cheese, cold cured meats, raw eggs and alcohol at a baby shower. That rules out sushi, ceviche, rare beef, homemade mayonnaise, chocolate mousse and tiramisu made with raw eggs. Offer decaffeinated coffee, pasteurized juices and fully cooked proteins instead, which our pregnancy-safe menus do by default.

Can you keep the baby's sex secret until the reveal?

Yes, and the only person who knows is the pastry cook who fills the cake. You or your doctor hand our coordinator a sealed envelope with the ultrasound result, it goes unopened to the cook, and the finished cake leaves our kitchen in a plain white box. Nobody else on our team sees the color until you cut the first slice.
