Catering in Sabaneta

Sabaneta has changed faster than any other town we serve, and Medellin Elite Catering has watched it happen from the van window since 2019. Pastures on the edge of town became 30-story residential towers, and the family parties moved from patios into salones sociales and BBQ kiosks.

Our Sabaneta work is mostly family-centered: baptism lunches after Mass at the sanctuary, children's birthdays by the complex pool, first communions and anniversary dinners. Young professionals who moved into the new towers book us for housewarmings and game-night spreads too.

Over the years we have learned how Sabaneta complexes run their social areas, from grill bans in some kiosks to elevators that fit only one Cambro cart at a time.

Catering Across Sabaneta

We cater throughout Sabaneta, often described as Colombia's smallest municipality, with an area of about 15 to 16.5 km² depending on the source. Few towns in the country have grown as quickly, and its skyline of residential towers now rivals neighborhoods of Medellín.

That density makes Sabaneta catering a vertical job. Most events happen in a tower's social room, rooftop or BBQ kiosk, so our planning starts with the building rather than the menu.

The drive from our kitchen runs 35 to 50 minutes along the southern corridor for drop-off orders and staffed events alike, and we time departures around the town's busy evening returns from Medellín.

Plantain is a point of local pride here, celebrated every June in the Fiestas del Plátano. Sabaneta hosts often ask us to work it into the menu, with crisp patacones topped with hogao, aborrajados (sweet plantain fritters filled with cheese) and maduro baked with bocadillo de guayaba as a side for grilled pork.

Areas We Serve in Sabaneta

Sabaneta is small enough that we cover every barrio and vereda. The town divides roughly into a flat urban core and rural veredas climbing the hills on either side.

Urban Sectors

  • Parque Principal and María Auxiliadora. The historic center around the sanctuary and main park, with older houses, restaurants and small salons.
  • Aves María. A busy sector around the Aves María shopping center, with dense apartment buildings and good street access.
  • Mayorca. The sector around the Mayorca shopping center toward the Itagüí side, popular for apartments close to the Autopista Sur.
  • Las Vegas and Restrepo Naranjo. Mid-rise residential areas along the Avenida Las Vegas corridor, convenient for quick drop-offs.

Rural Veredas

  • La Doctora. Hillside fincas, country houses and newer gated towers on the eastern slope.
  • Cañaveralejo. A fast-growing vereda where many of the newest tower complexes went up.
  • Pan de Azúcar, San José and Las Lomitas. Quieter rural areas with family fincas, where a weekend asado for 40 relatives is the typical booking.

Social Rooms in New Towers

Nearly every new Sabaneta complex comes with a salón social, a BBQ kiosk and often a pool deck, and these are where most of our events take place. Rules vary by complex, so we ask for the building's reglamento before we plan anything.

Capacity is the first limit. Social rooms in Sabaneta towers often hold 30 to 60 guests, which suits baptisms and birthdays but can force a buffet instead of a seated meal.

Kitchenettes are usually small, with a sink, a fridge and one or two outlets. We bring the food finished, hold it hot in insulated carriers and use the counter only for plating.

Booking goes through the administración, often with a strict end time and a rule that the room is handed back clean. Ask at the same time whether outside caterers may use the BBQ kiosk, whether charcoal or only gas is allowed, and whether our van can use a visitor space near the service elevator.

Pool decks bring their own rules, such as no glass within a few meters of the water. Our pool party catering switches to unbreakable serveware for those, and our kids' birthday party catering adds a kids' menu served in smaller portions.

Religious Celebrations Around the Sanctuary

The Santuario de María Auxiliadora on Sabaneta's main park is one of the best-known pilgrimage churches in the Aburrá Valley, and it shapes how families here celebrate. Tuesday is the traditional pilgrimage day, when hundreds of faithful fill the park for Mass, a tradition dating back to the mid-1960s.

Baptisms, first communions and wedding anniversaries at the sanctuary usually end with lunch at home or in a social room nearby. Our baptism catering is planned around the ceremony time: we set up while the family is at church so the buffet is hot when everyone arrives, typically 45 to 60 minutes after the service ends.

Timing around the park matters. On Tuesdays and Sundays, streets near the sanctuary are crowded and parking disappears, so we unload early or choose a social room a few blocks away.

A baptism lunch buffet for 35 guests runs with 2 servers, and tableware and cleanup come with it. In late June, the Fiestas del Plátano also fill the center with concerts and visitors, which we plan around for deliveries that week.

Many families also host a short reception for godparents (padrinos) before the main lunch. A tray of pandebonos, mini empanadas and coffee in the social room bridges the gap while photos are taken at the church.

Easy Access via the Metro Corridor

Sabaneta sits on the Medellín Metro's Line A, served by the Sabaneta station, with the La Estrella terminus just to the south and the Autopista Sur running alongside. That corridor is our main route south and one reason Sabaneta events run on schedule despite the distance.

For deliveries, the riverside highways and the Autopista Sur give our van a direct run from the kitchen, avoiding the slower climb through El Poblado. We still allow 35 to 50 minutes and leave earlier on Friday afternoons.

For staffing, the Metro is a quiet advantage. Servers and bartenders can reach a Sabaneta event and get home after a late finish without long taxi rides, which helps us keep the same experienced team on long weekend events. If you only need trays delivered, our catering delivery service brings drop-off orders with 48 hours' notice.

Questions and answers

Sabaneta Catering FAQs

Can you cater in my building's BBQ area?

Yes, provided your administración allows outside caterers to use the BBQ zone. Each complex sets its own grill rules: some allow charcoal, some only the built-in gas grill, and some ban cooking flames altogether. Send us the reglamento or a photo of the posted rules and we will plan a grilled menu, or bring the meats finished and use the kiosk for holding and serving.

Do you serve La Doctora's hillside fincas?

Yes, we cater fincas and country houses in vereda La Doctora. The roads are steep and narrow in places, so we confirm the route, the last point a van can safely reach and the parking spot before the event. Staffed events there run on the same terms as the rest of Sabaneta, and the drive usually sits at the long end of our 35 to 50 minute estimate.
