Diabetic-Friendly Catering in Medellín

Medellin Elite Catering builds diabetic-friendly menus for events and family meals in Medellín: balanced plates, measured starch portions and desserts with far less sugar. Guests managing type 1 or type 2 diabetes can eat with everyone else instead of skipping half the table.

Colombian celebrations lean sweet, from panela-rich aguapanela to natilla and buñuelos in December. Our head chef keeps those flavors while lowering the sugar, and on request we provide approximate carbohydrate counts so guests can plan their own intake.

We are caterers, not clinicians: we supply nutrition information, and each guest follows the advice of their own doctor or diabetes educator.

Our Diabetic-Friendly Catering

Diabetic-friendly catering means menus with controlled carbohydrate portions, plenty of fiber and protein, no added sugar in savory dishes, and reduced-sugar or sugar-free desserts and drinks. Most of these dishes suit every guest, so hosts rarely need separate plates: we portion the starches and label the sweets.

We cook this way for milestone birthdays of older relatives, Christmas dinners and family gathering catering at home, plus retirement party catering where several guests watch their sugar. Corporate wellness lunches follow the same principles in boxed form.

Families booking catering in Itagüí receive delivered meals within 30 to 45 minutes of leaving our kitchen. Diabetic-friendly plates sit on the same quote as the rest of the menu, so the host manages one order for the whole table.

Balanced Plates

A balanced plate fills half with vegetables, a quarter with protein and a quarter with starch, a layout widely used in diabetes education because it makes portions easy to see. We plate and portion our food to that pattern, then let guests adjust from there.

Part of the plateWhat we serveTypical portion
Vegetables (half)Green salads, grilled zucchini and eggplant, steamed green beans, ahuyama150 g or more
Protein (a quarter)Grilled chicken, fish, beef, eggs, beans, lentils150 to 180 g cooked at dinner
Starch (a quarter)Arepa, rice, papa criolla, yuca, plantainOne measured piece or scoop
FatAvocado, olive oil dressingsServed on the side

On a bandeja paisa, the swap is a smaller arepa, half the rice and extra avocado and salad, with the beans kept because their fiber slows how fast the meal's carbohydrates are absorbed. On a buffet, we add cauliflower rice beside the white rice and cut yuca and papa criolla into even pieces, so guests can take one or two without guessing.

Sauces stay savory: hogao, chimichurri, ají and lime dressings carry flavor with almost no sugar. We avoid sweet glazes, honey mustard and panela-based marinades on dishes labeled diabetic-friendly.

Low-Sugar Desserts and Drinks

Low-sugar desserts and drinks keep the celebration sweet while cutting most of the added sugar. Every dessert table we set up can include an orange-tagged section for them, and every bar can pour drinks with no added sugar.

On the dessert side, we make maracuyá panna cotta sweetened with stevia, dark chocolate mousse, fresh fruit cups with plain yogurt and a reduced-sugar natilla thickened with cornstarch and sweetened with erythritol and cinnamon. Sugar-free does not mean carbohydrate-free, because milk, fruit and starch still count, so each dessert card shows its approximate carbohydrates.

Sweeteners such as erythritol and sucralose replace sugar well in small portions, but large amounts of sugar alcohols can upset digestion, so we keep servings modest. For a larger spread, our dessert catering menu can be built with half the table reduced-sugar.

Colombian drinks are often the hidden sugar: aguapanela, jugos naturales blended with sugar, sodas and sweet cocktails such as piña colada. We offer water infused with lime, mint or cucumber, tinto and herbal aromáticas without sugar, juices blended in water with no sugar added (lulo works especially well), diet sodas and cocktails made with soda water and fresh lime.

Questions and answers

Diabetic-Friendly FAQs

Can you provide carb counts?

Yes, we can give approximate grams of carbohydrate per serving for every dish on your menu, calculated from our recipe weights and standard food composition data. They are kitchen estimates, not laboratory analysis, so we round them and show the portion size they refer to. Ask for them when you request your quote, and we will print them on the menu cards or send them as a document for the guest.

Are there sugar-free desserts at the dessert table?

Yes, any dessert table we set up can include sugar-free or reduced-sugar options, marked with an orange tag and their approximate carbohydrates. Typical choices are a stevia-sweetened maracuyá panna cotta, a dark chocolate mousse and fresh fruit cups with plain yogurt. We group them at one end of the table with their own tongs, so guests can find them without asking.
