Outdoor Event Catering in Medellín

Medellin Elite Catering caters outdoor events at fincas, haciendas, gardens and open-air venues around Medellín and eastern Antioquia, including sites with no kitchen, no grid power and no paved road. We bring the cooking, the staff and the plan for rain.

Our outdoor clients host milestone birthdays on finca lawns, family reunions at haciendas in the Envigado hills, company days in the countryside and big celebrations under tents in Llanogrande and Rionegro. Most of these events run 50 to 300 guests, often a long way from the nearest shop.

Since 2019 we have learned outdoor catering the practical way: generators that need a backup plan, roads that turn to mud in October, and buffets that must move under cover in ten minutes. Our largest single event so far fed 900 guests, so a big open-air party sits comfortably within our range.

Our Outdoor Event Catering

Outdoor event catering means running a full catering operation where there is no venue infrastructure: we bring or arrange the kitchen, power, water, shelter and service. It suits fincas, haciendas, open lawns and any site where the menu has to be cooked or finished on location.

Every outdoor event starts with a site visit or a detailed photo and video walk-through, so we know where the kitchen tent, the buffet and the dining area will sit. We check the slope and the ground, the distance from where the van parks to the service area, and the nearest bathroom for our team.

Many outdoor events are also weddings, and those follow our wedding catering process with its own tasting and timeline.

Planning Around Medellín's Rainy Seasons

Medellín has two rainy seasons, April to May and October to November, and in both the rain usually arrives in the afternoon or evening as short, heavy showers. That is why a tent or covered area is standard on every outdoor event we quote, not an optional extra.

December to March and June to August are drier, but a shower is still possible in any month in the Aburrá Valley. Higher sites in Llanogrande and La Ceja add cold nights, often around 12 °C after sunset, which changes both the menu and the drinks.

We schedule service so the main meal ends before the typical afternoon storm, keep a covered path between the kitchen and the buffet, and carry plastic covers for every chafing dish. If the ground is likely to be wet, we ask for flooring or pallets under the kitchen tent.

Mobile Kitchens and Power

At a venue without services, we set up a field kitchen with gas burners, our barrel smoker, chafing dishes and insulated Cambro carriers, plus a generator and water tanks where needed. Most of the cooking still happens in our production kitchen in Medellín, and the field kitchen finishes and holds the food.

Power comes from a rented generator, placed downwind and away from the tables, with fuel for the full event plus a margin. Warming equipment, work lights and a bar blender usually need a 5 to 10 kVA unit, while sound and stage lighting from other suppliers need their own.

Water matters as much as power: we bring potable water in sealed tanks for cooking and handwashing, and a separate supply for rinsing equipment. Grey water is collected rather than poured onto the lawn, and used cooking oil comes back to our kitchen for a registered collector under Resolution 316 of 2018.

Access and Setup at Rural Venues

Rural venues need more setup time, usually 3 to 4 hours instead of the 2 to 3 we need in the city, because of unpaved roads, long carries and a kitchen built from scratch. We confirm the road and the parking before we confirm the menu.

  • Road: can a refrigerated van reach the service area, or does the last stretch need a smaller 4x4?
  • Distance: how far is the walk from parking to the kitchen tent, and is it flat?
  • Timing: fincas in Llanogrande, Rionegro and La Ceja sit 1 to 2.5 hours from our kitchen, longer on holiday weekends.
  • Rules: does the owner allow open flames, generators and music, and until what hour?
  • Waste: is there collection on site, or do we take everything back?

The drive and the extra setup hours are planned into the quote, along with the tent, generator, flooring, water tanks and lighting we coordinate through partner suppliers. For hillside fincas closer to the city, our page on catering in Envigado covers the routes and drive times.

Outdoor Menus

The menus that work best outdoors are cooked over fire or hold well in bulk: asados, paella, barrel-smoked meats and live stations. They suit the setting, feed a crowd quickly and draw people to the food.

Asado al barril is our signature outdoor dish: pork ribs, chicken and beef hung in our barrel smoker and cooked slowly over charcoal for about 3 hours. We serve it with papas criollas, arepas, chimichurri, guacamole and a big green salad, allowing 250 to 300 g of meat per adult.

Paella cooks in wide pans over gas rings in front of the crowd, in seafood, chicken or vegetable versions, while stations for pasta, tacos or desserts spread the queues. Our buffet catering page shows how we lay out long outdoor buffet lines, with double-sided tables once a crowd passes about 80.

Questions and answers

Outdoor Event FAQs

Do you bring generators?

Yes, when the venue has no reliable power, we arrange a generator through our rental partners and size it to our kitchen and bar equipment. It appears on the quote with fuel for the whole event, and we place it well away from the dining area to keep noise and fumes down.

What is your rain plan?

Our rain plan is a tent or covered area for the kitchen, the buffet and the dining tables, booked together with the catering rather than added on the day. We also cover every chafing dish, keep a dry route between the kitchen and the buffet, and time the main meal to finish before the usual afternoon storm.
