Colombia celebrates its own independence on 20 July, sixteen days after the American one, so many binational families and companies throw one party for both. The 20 July holiday commemorates the Grito de Independencia of 1810 in Bogotá, and it is a public holiday here while the Fourth is a normal working day.
A combined party is easy to build on a menu: burgers and ribs next to chorizo antioqueño, arepas with cheese, patacones with hogao and a pot of fríjoles. For dessert, apple pie sits beside obleas with arequipe, and the table looks red, white, blue and yellow at the same time.
If the Fourth falls on a weekday, most hosts move the party to the nearest Saturday, which often lands close to 20 July as well. In 2027 the Fourth is a Sunday; our office is closed that day, but events run as normal when booked in advance.
